Microsoft Closes Africa Development Centre in Lagos, Terminates Employees

Microsoft, the American tech giant, has shuttered its Africa Development Centre (ADC) located in Lagos, Nigeria, and terminated all its employees at the site.

The ADC was a key component of Microsoft’s expansive initiative in Africa, aimed at fostering local solutions with global impact, generating employment opportunities, and nurturing technological innovation across the continent.

While the exact reasons behind the layoffs and the closure of the Lagos facility remain unclear, reports indicate the sudden and unexpected nature of the decision.

Established in May 2019, the ADC sought to cultivate innovative technologies not only for Africa but for the broader global community. Microsoft had initially called for skilled engineers to focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and mixed reality projects. The company had also committed to investing $100 million into the centre over its first five years of operation.

The Lagos facility was formally inaugurated on March 21, 2022, with plans to accommodate product engineering, ecosystem development, and innovation teams. It also housed the Microsoft Garage, an initiative aimed at fostering innovation within the African tech ecosystem.

Microsoft’s investment in the ADC aimed to harness the continent’s rich pool of engineering talent, aiming to develop local solutions with global scalability. Alongside a similar facility in Kenya, the centre in Nigeria was positioned to advance this strategic objective.

However, the sudden closure of the ADC in Lagos and the dismissal of its workforce underscore the challenges faced by global technology firms in navigating the dynamic African market. As of now, Microsoft has not issued an official statement regarding this development.
