Army notifies Nigerians of false news about military operations

By Jennifer Y Omiloli

The Nigerian Army has called on Nigerians to ignore social media reports claiming that residents will be witnessing large numbers of uniformed Nigerian Army personnel parading the roads in an exercise known as Operation Positive Identification (OPI) from November 1 to December 23, 2019.

Nigerian Army spokesman Sagir Musa dissociated the army from the report by a certain organization called Bricks in a statement on Saturday, November 2, alleging that the army is planning to launch an operation tagged OPI throughout the country.

He said the army is not carrying out any of its operations in the manner maliciously presented by the so-called Bricks company, and will not create any operation with such a name or abbreviation.

Colonel Musa also explained that the army rarely issues press releases through private firms or third parties because it has a department of public relations and information that has a close relationship with the press.

The spokesman for the army noted that the Nigerian Army has an ongoing positive identification campaign to complement the ongoing operation in the northeast, which is intelligence-driven, deliberate, focused operation and not an isolated operation but is integral to and complements Campaign Lafiya Dole in the northeast.

He noted that the operation’s objective is to arrest all those terrorists who flee to peaceful areas in Nigeria from the war zone.

The army urged the public to disregard its alleged NA OPI called the mischievous Bricks company.
