Veteran musician Daddy Showkey has recounted a harrowing experience from his past, revealing how his involvement in gang activities in Ikorodu, Lagos State, nearly led to his death by lynching.
In a preview for the next episode of the podcast “The Honest Bunch,” Daddy Showkey shared that he and three young men found a gun in a refuse dump and began using it to terrorize residents. Their criminal activities came to a head one day when they were caught and nearly lynched by an angry mob.
“We were out doing what we usually did when someone spotted us and started screaming, ‘thieves, thieves, thieves.’ We tried to run, but we were caught, tied up, and on the verge of being set on fire. Miraculously, we were saved,” Daddy Showkey recounted.
The singer emphasized that his survival and subsequent rise to fame serve as a testament to the potential for greatness in everyone, regardless of their background.
“I was in a gang back in the day. I won’t lie. Some of us found a gun in a refuse dump in Ikorodu and started using it to terrorize the area. One day, we were caught, tied up, and nearly burned alive. But we were saved miraculously,” he said.
Daddy Showkey also revealed the tragic fate of one of his former gang members, who was later caught and lynched.
Reflecting on his journey, he added, “I am a living testimony for every young person. If I can be alive today and become Daddy Showkey, then there’s hope for everyone.”
