N100m: KEDCO Restores Power to Aliko Dangote University in Kano

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) Wudil, in Kano State, has announced that the university has been reconnected to the grid following the intervention of the Kano State Government and the Dangote Foundation.

A press statement made available to newsmen in Kano by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, explained that “the University was reconnected with electricity by KEDCO on Friday, July 5, 2024, at about 4 PM local time.”

Prof. Yakasai further stated that the reconnection was facilitated by the prompt intervention of the Kano State Government and the Chancellor of the University, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, through the Dangote Foundation, which made an initial payment of N100 million with a commitment by the Kano State Government to offset the outstanding liabilities of not only the University but other state MDAs.

The Vice Chancellor hinted that the Dangote Foundation is exploring a lasting solution to the University’s electricity supply problem through means such as solar mini-grids.

The signed statement by Prof. Yakasai read in part: “The entire University Community is deeply grateful for the timely intervention and efforts of the Kano State Government under the stewardship of His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, through the office of the SSG Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, and the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofarmata.”

“Special appreciation goes to our Chancellor and the president of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, as well as the DG of the Dangote Foundation and her team.

“Let me use this opportunity to appreciate members of the University community, both staff and students, for the understanding and patience shown during this very trying time,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor therefore appealed to members of the university community to reciprocate the gesture by supporting the management’s efforts in ensuring the judicious utilization of electricity on the campus.
