Sultanate council: Clerics caution colleagues against misconception

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The Coalition of Northern Youth Imams on Saturday cautioned their colleagues against misconception of Sokoto State reform laws on the Sultanate Council, saying the rumour of deposing the Sultan was untrue.

A statement by Alhaji Bashir further said the clerics made the disclosure during a two-day workshop to sensitise the Muslim clerics and Imams on the need to verify information with regards to the sultanate before making conclusions.

The Chairman of the occasion, Sheikh Abdulrahman Jibril -Funtua said it was part of the teachings of Islam to refrain from spreading rumour and making judgement or conclusion before verification.

He urged the government to prioritise social welfare and development of its people, saying the masses were suffering inflation, insecurity and devaluation of the Naira.

” Any new policy by the government should be thoroughly checked to see if it would benefit the masses before going public; the imams should also verify information before making a judgment.

“With regards to Samoa deal, if it is true that it supports same sex marriage, then we do not agree to its implementation because it is against our faith and culture, ” he said.

Jibril -Funtua urged the Federal government to create a commission that would overlook the affairs of traditional institutions, and discard the subordination of the institution to state Governors.

He reiterated the council’s support of the powers of Sultan Abubakar Sa’ad as the Muslim leader in Nigeria, saying, ”I am positive he is beyond Sokoto State.”

Similarly,Imam Rabiu Yahya stated that the clerics were important to the society as they enjoined people to do good and refrain from bad while enlightening them on the teachings of their religion.

He, however, cautioned the clerics who condemn leaders or government during sermons on issues they were not sure of or have no full knowledge of, saying Islam teaches verification and research before conclusion.
