In a recent address, Hon. Alhassan Doguwa, an All Progressives Congress (APC) federal lawmaker from Kano, urged Nigerians to extend their scrutiny beyond the presidency and hold state governors accountable for the nation’s issues.
Amid ongoing protests, Doguwa, who previously served as the Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, emphasized that solving the country’s problems requires accountability at all levels of government. He pointed out that governors, local government councils, and other agencies are also responsible for addressing public concerns such as basic amenities and security.
“I recognize that Nigeria faces significant challenges, including economic and social issues. However, it’s crucial to understand that these problems cannot be solely attributed to the federal government,” Doguwa stated during a meeting with Kano Youth Forum officials.
He criticized the recent wave of looting and vandalism associated with the nationwide protests that began on August 1, calling for a more constructive approach to resolving grievances.
As the chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Doguwa advised that dialogue, rather than protests, is the most effective way to address pressing issues. He stressed that accountability should be a collective effort involving all sectors of society.
“Blaming only the federal government is not the solution. While the government must be held responsible, it is essential for everyone—individuals, organizations, and associations—to contribute towards finding solutions,” he concluded.
