New CJN Kekere-Ekun Breaks Silence After Being Sworn In, Reveals Actions to Take

By   Milcah  Tanimu

Following her recent swearing-in as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun has made her first public statements, outlining her plans to address key issues within the judiciary.

Justice Kekere-Ekun has pledged to work closely with her fellow justices to drive meaningful reforms and address the pressing concerns within the judiciary. She emphasized her commitment to tackling deficiencies and improving the judicial system’s effectiveness.

Her appointment has not been without controversy. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised several concerns about her suitability for the role. They have questioned her involvement in the contentious 2019 Imo State gubernatorial election judgment and alleged issues regarding her asset declaration, which they claim have not been thoroughly investigated by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Additionally, HURIWA has suggested that her appointment may have been influenced by political support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, raising questions about the motivations behind her elevation to the position of CJN.

Despite these controversies, Justice Kekere-Ekun is focusing on her agenda to implement reforms and enhance the judiciary’s integrity.
