Omah Lay Welcomes “Afro-Depression” Label for His Music

By Milcah Tanimu

Nigerian music sensation Omah Lay has expressed his appreciation for the “Afro-depression” label that fans have assigned to his music. Known for delving into themes of pain, loneliness, and the trials of fame, Omah Lay’s work resonates deeply with his audience.

In a recent conversation with Billboard, Omah Lay shared his enthusiasm for the term “Afro-depression,” which was coined by his listeners. He views this label as a testament to the genuine connection his fans have with his music.

“I’m thrilled about it. It’s amazing that my music has sparked a new trend and people have come up with a label like ‘Afro-Depression’ without me having to clarify it myself,” Omah Lay stated. “It’s incredible to see my music start a movement and to have the world define it.”

His debut album, *Boy Alone*, with tracks like the poignant “Soso,” has played a significant role in popularizing this genre. Omah Lay’s emotionally charged music has significantly influenced the Afrobeats scene, inspiring a new wave of artists who draw from his style.

Omah Lay also discussed his latest single, “Moving,” the first release of 2023 and a teaser for his upcoming sophomore album. He recently had to re-record the album after an artist who had been privy to his vision reportedly stole his sound.
