NANS to Shut Down Major Cities Over Petrol Price Hike on September 15

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans to shut down all major cities across Nigeria starting September 15, 2024, in response to the recent hike in petrol prices. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited recently increased the price of petrol to N855 per litre, sparking widespread concern.

In a statement released on Wednesday, NANS demanded the immediate reversal of the petrol price hike and called for the removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd. The student body expressed that the continuous rise in fuel prices has caused severe hardship for Nigerians and that they can no longer remain silent.

NANS urged all Nigerian students to join the peaceful protest, emphasizing their commitment to a lawful demonstration. The association also called on authorities to maintain law and order during the planned shutdown.

“We shall not be silenced, and we shall not be intimidated. We urge you to take necessary measures to maintain law and order during the shutdown, as we assure you that our protest will be peaceful and lawful,” NANS stated.

As the protest date approaches, tension is building, with students and citizens eagerly watching to see if the government will respond to these demands.
