President Bola Tinubu on Monday reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the independence and integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary as he swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, the second woman in Nigeria’s history to hold the position, was sworn in following her Senate confirmation on September 25, 2024.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the judiciary’s critical role in upholding Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. “The judiciary is a fundamental pillar supporting our constitutional democracy,” he said. “At various points in history, it has acted as the moderating force, ensuring that all remain accountable.”
Tinubu highlighted the judiciary’s role as the “last hope of the common man,” which sustains public confidence in democracy by providing redress for wrongs.
He stressed the importance of maintaining judicial independence and assured that his administration would not interfere with the judiciary. “While we may interface as complementary branches of government, under my administration, we will respect the clear boundary between the judiciary and the executive. We will never interfere in a manner that undermines that independence,” he added.
The President also reiterated his government’s commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers, ensuring they are well-equipped to dispense justice effectively.
Tinubu praised Justice Kekere-Ekun’s career, marked by ethical leadership, fearlessness, and honesty, urging her to continue setting an example for others. “The Nigerian judiciary needs a leader with your qualities, and I am confident you will set the pace,” he said.
He lauded her journey through the judicial ranks, describing it as a source of inspiration for women, especially in a traditionally male-dominated field. “This is a proud moment for Nigerian women. Any girl can now aspire to reach the highest levels of their chosen profession,” Tinubu remarked.
The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including Justice Kekere-Ekun’s family, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, four former Chief Justices of Nigeria, and several other senior members of the judiciary. The President thanked the Senate for expediting her confirmation and expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its continued support.
