The Origin of the Name “Gen Z”

By   Milcah   Tanimu

One of the most recognized generations today is Generation Z, commonly known as **Gen Z**. This group includes individuals born between 1997 and 2012, though some sources extend the range from 1995 to 2010.

What Does “Gen Z” Mean?

Gen Z is recognized for its eccentricities, outspoken nature, diversity, inclusivity, authenticity, and fondness for 90s-inspired fashion, often called **Y2K style**. But how did they get their name?

The Connection to Previous Generations

Gen Z is the offspring of **Generation X**, which comprises individuals born between 1965 and 1980. The “Z” in their name is said to represent **”Zoomers,”** highlighting that they are the first generation to grow up with widespread access to the internet and smartphones. This term reflects their tendency to engage with technology, often making a “zooming” motion with their fingers on touchscreens.

Additionally, Gen Z is often referred to as **digital natives**, the **internet generation**, or **centennials**. They have grown up immersed in social media and technology, which has significantly influenced their communication styles and perspectives on social issues. Many Gen Zers are content creators and influencers in today’s digital landscape.

Who Coined the Term “Gen Z”?

The term “Gen Z” was first used by researchers and demographers to label the generation following **Generation Y**, or **Millennials**. The naming pattern that began with **Generation X** continued with Generations Y and Z. While no single person is credited with coining “Gen Z,” the term gained traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s as scholars began studying this generation born into a rapidly evolving digital world.

Interestingly, the name “Gen Z” perfectly encapsulates the unique characteristics and behaviors that define this generation today.
