Senator Lalong’s Bill for Establishment of National Council of Traditional Rulers Passes First Reading in Senate

To ensure that traditional institutions in Nigeria are granted defined constitutional roles, the National Council of Traditional Rulers (Establishment) Bill, 2024 (SB. 546), sponsored by Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District, has successfully passed its first reading in the Senate.

The bill was introduced on the floor of the Senate by the Clerk and aims to confer constitutional responsibilities upon traditional rulers to address the nation’s challenges effectively. Senator Lalong, a former Governor of Plateau State and Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, has long advocated for the inclusion of roles for traditional rulers in the Constitution.

Previous attempts to pass this bill were unsuccessful, prompting Senator Lalong to renew his efforts to present it for consideration and passage.

To garner support for the bill, Senator Lalong has actively engaged with his colleagues, traditional rulers nationwide, and other stakeholders to facilitate its smooth progression through the legislative process.

According to Senator Lalong, the passage of this bill will assist in tackling pressing issues such as insecurity by leveraging the influence of traditional institutions, which are closest to the communities they serve. Additionally, the bill aims to address peacebuilding, inter-community conflicts, land disputes, and other socio-cultural challenges that traditional rulers are well-positioned to handle.

Once the bill is read for the second time, it is expected to be referred to the relevant committees for public hearings, where comprehensive discussions will be conducted to advance its passage into law.
