Jigawa Tanker Explosion: Death Toll Rises to 170 as Families Mourn

[By Abigail Philip David]

The death toll from the tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa State has reached 170, with 70 others still critically injured and receiving treatment at various hospitals. This was confirmed by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, in a statement on Friday.

The explosion occurred in Majiya, Taura Local Government Area, when a petrol tanker overturned while trying to avoid a collision, causing fuel to spill. Many locals rushed to collect the leaking fuel, leading to a massive explosion that initially claimed 153 lives, with more fatalities confirmed in the following days.

**Families Grieve Lost Loved Ones**

The town of Majiya has been devastated by the disaster, which left a trail of destruction and heartbreak. Aisha Mohammed, a resident, mourned the loss of her 25-year-old brother. “He was full of life and promise. His death is a devastating blow to our family,” she said.

Malam Inuwa Abdullahi, who lost his 17-year-old son, expressed deep sorrow, saying, “My son was everything to me. Now, he’s gone, leaving me with unbearable pain.”

Many residents gathered at the scene and hospitals, searching for their loved ones amidst the chaos. Isah Abubakar, who had been with his friend Musa just hours before the explosion, shared his grief, saying, “We had plans to start a business together. Now, he’s gone, and I’m left with only memories.”

For some, like Halima Umar, the loss is still hard to comprehend. “Fatima was more than just a sister; she was my best friend. Her death has left a void in my life that can never be filled,” she said.

**Concerns Over Emergency Response**

Some residents expressed frustration over the emergency response, feeling that quicker action could have saved lives. Alhaji Nura Usman, a local resident, said, “If the authorities had acted faster, some lives might have been saved.” Others blamed the tanker driver for speeding and reckless driving, with eyewitness Ibrahim Sani saying, “The driver didn’t even stop when he lost control.”

Amidst the grief, many found solace in their faith. Hajiya Aminah, who lost her nephew, said, “Allah knows best. We must accept His will and pray for the souls of the departed.”

**Hospitals Overwhelmed**

Hospitals in Jigawa and neighboring states, where many victims are being treated, are overwhelmed with the influx of injured people and sympathizers. At the Rasheed Shekoni Specialist Hospital in Dutse, our reporter observed the chaotic scene as family members anxiously waited for news of their loved ones. The emergency ward was packed with tearful relatives and concerned friends, desperate for updates.

Inside, medical staff worked tirelessly to attend to the critically injured. “The sound of beeping monitors, urgent whispers, and occasional cries filled the air,” our correspondent noted, as doctors and nurses moved swiftly, fighting to save lives.

**Calls for Support**

As the town of Majiya begins to process the tragedy, there are growing calls for compensation and support for the affected families. Local activist Yakubu Namama urged the government to provide assistance, though many, like Aisha Mohammed, believe no compensation can ever replace the loss of a loved one.

“We will always remember our loved ones who left us too soon,” said Halima Dahiru, her voice heavy with emotion.

As the community embarks on the painful road to recovery, the memory of the devastating explosion will remain a permanent scar in the hearts of the people of Majiya.
