Ohanaeze Urges Federal Government to Eliminate New Terror Group Lakurawa

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged the federal government to take swift action against a new terrorist group known as “Lakurawa,” warning that the lives of Igbo traders in Kebbi and Sokoto states are in imminent danger.

This call was made in a statement issued by the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Maxi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and released to journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday. The statement emphasized the urgency of addressing the threat posed by Lakurawa, which has reportedly displaced traditional rulers in Kebbi State and assumed authority over local governance, undermining the rule of law.

“Lakurawa’s actions pose an immediate danger to Igbo communities in the northwest, affecting the livelihoods and safety of residents,” the statement read. “Reports indicate forced robberies of goods and the tragic loss of Igbo lives due to Lakurawa’s activities.”

The group also highlighted the challenges faced by the Kebbi State Governor in addressing the threat, calling on the federal government to support Dr. Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence, in securing the region.

Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ohanaeze emphasized the importance of acting swiftly to prevent Lakurawa from growing into a larger terrorist organization. “We urge President Tinubu to collaborate with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and mobilize strategic military actions to dismantle Lakurawa.”

The statement concludes with a firm commitment to the safety of Igbo citizens across Nigeria and a call for collective action to eradicate the threat posed by Lakurawa.
