BREAKING: Federal Government Removes Nnamdi Azikiwe University VC, Dissolves Governing Council

By Abigail Philip David

The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed Dr. Bernard Odoh as Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and dissolved the institution’s Governing Council.

The announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement signed by Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education.

The decision follows allegations by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that the Governing Council failed to adhere to due process in appointing Dr. Odoh. ASUU had called on the ministry to address the situation, citing irregularities.

The statement highlighted severe violations of university regulations, including the Governing Council’s unilateral decision to appoint a Vice-Chancellor who did not meet the required eligibility criteria. This action reportedly disrupted peace and order on campus, sparking tension and disharmony.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of Education, stressed the need for immediate intervention to restore stability at the institution. He described the Council’s actions as a threat to the university’s governance and compliance with legal standards.

To address the situation, the Federal Government has initiated the following measures:

1. Dissolution of the Governing Council: The Council has been disbanded due to its failure to uphold the university’s laws and directives.
2. Removal of Prof. Bernard Odoh: The Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Council has been relieved of his duties.

An Acting Vice-Chancellor will be appointed to oversee the institution’s affairs temporarily. Additionally, plans are underway to reconstitute the Governing Council to ensure proper governance and strict adherence to the law.
