FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Key Things to Know

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, featuring an expanded 32-team format, will take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13. Here’s an overview of the tournament’s history, participants, venues, and format:

1. History
– The idea of a global club championship dates back over 60 years.
– The Intercontinental Cup (1960-2004) featured matches between European and South American champions, with Real Madrid winning the inaugural edition against Uruguay’s Peñarol.
– FIFA’s Club World Cup began in 2000 as an eight-team event and has used a seven-team format in recent years.
– The 2025 edition marks a major expansion to 32 teams, the largest in the tournament’s history.

2. Teams Participating
Thirty-two clubs from around the world will compete:
– Europe (12 teams): Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Atlético Madrid, RB Salzburg.
– South America (6 teams): Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, River Plate, Boca Juniors.
– North/Central America & Caribbean (4 teams): Monterrey, Seattle Sounders, Club León, Pachuca.
– Africa (4 teams): Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, ES Tunis, Mamelodi Sundowns.
– Asia (4 teams): Al Hilal, Urawa Red Diamonds, Al Ain, Ulsan Hyundai FC.
– Oceania (1 team): Auckland City.
– Host Nation (1 team): Inter Miami.

3. Venues
Twelve U.S. stadiums will host the tournament’s 63 matches:
– Opening Game: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida.
– Final Match: MetLife Stadium, New Jersey/New York.

– Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta, GA)
– TQL Stadium (Cincinnati, OH)
– Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, NC)
– Rose Bowl Stadium (Pasadena, CA)

– Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia, PA)

4. Format
– The tournament adopts a format similar to the FIFA World Cup (1998–2022).
– Group Stage: 32 teams split into eight groups of four.
– Knockout Rounds: Top two teams from each group advance to the Round of 16, followed by single-elimination matches until the final.
– No Third-Place Match: Only the final determines the champion.

This revamped competition is set to showcase global football talent and further elevate club football on the international stage.
