Kaduna NLC Suspends Strike for Seven Days Amid Minimum Wage Dispute

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kaduna State has temporarily paused its warning strike. This decision allows time for further dialogue with the state government regarding the new minimum wage implementation.

Reasons for the Suspension

Kaduna State NLC Chairman Ayuba Magaji Suleiman announced the decision after the State Executive Council meeting. Labor unions began the strike due to wage discrepancies that caused unequal treatment among workers.

“We resolved to suspend the strike for seven days to give the government space to revisit the table,” Suleiman said.

The government claims it complies with a minimum gross salary of N72,000. However, labor unions argue that authorities have not fully implemented the agreed wage adjustments.

Nationwide Developments

  • Nasarawa State: The government urged workers to remain patient as it finalizes financial adjustments for the new wage.
  • Ebonyi State: Many workers disregarded the strike directive after Governor Francis Nwifuru threatened to sack them.
  • Federal Capital Territory (FCT): NULGE halted activities in area councils while demanding wage implementation and arrears payment.

Labour’s Position

The NLC continues to push state governments for timely wage adjustments. Union leaders stress their willingness to engage in dialogue but demand immediate action to address workers’ concerns.
