NNPC Pledges 60% Methane Emission Reduction by 2031

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has committed to reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector by 60% by 2031, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060. This aligns with Nigeria’s leadership role under the Global Methane Pledge.

During a meeting with U.S. State Department’s Global Methane Program Manager Robert Leahman and Deloitte representatives in Abuja, NNPC’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, outlined efforts to achieve these goals.

“Reducing methane emissions is a strategic imperative for Nigeria’s energy transition. We’re leveraging partnerships to adopt global best practices and innovative solutions,” Kyari said.

A key initiative is a pilot project in the Niger Delta. This collaboration with Deloitte and the U.S. Bureau of Energy Resources focuses on establishing methane emissions baselines, addressing leaks, and promoting sustainable practices.

Robert Leahman praised Nigeria’s proactive approach, saying, “Nigeria’s leadership under the Global Methane Pledge sets a standard for the continent, driving sustainable energy development.”

Kyari added, “By addressing methane leaks, we reduce waste, save costs, and protect the environment. It’s a win-win for the economy and the planet.”

NNPC’s initiative reflects its broader commitment to climate action and sustainable energy practices, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leader in combating global climate change.
