Auto Crash: Governor Zulum Mourns Borno Varsity Students, Moves to Restrict Trailers

By Abigail Philip David

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two Borno State University students and left 16 others critically injured. The crash occurred on Wednesday along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road.

In a statement released on Thursday by his spokesperson, Dauda Illiya, Governor Zulum extended heartfelt condolences to the university community, parents, and guardians of the affected students.

The accident involved a university staff bus and a truck belonging to Dangote Group in the Njimtilo area. The students were reportedly returning from their examinations when the collision happened.

“I am deeply touched by this tragic accident involving a students’ bus and a trailer,” Zulum said. “My deepest sympathies go to the families of the students, as well as the management, staff, and students of Borno State University.”

While eight of the injured students have been discharged and are recovering, others remain hospitalized. The governor assured that the state government will cover all medical expenses for the victims and personally visit the hospitalized students to offer support.

### Measures to Prevent Future Accidents

To avert similar tragedies, Zulum announced plans to fast-track the completion of the Maiduguri Trailer Park project.

“I have directed the Ministry of Works to ensure the immediate completion of the trailer park. Once operational, trailers will no longer be permitted into the city centre,” Zulum stated, emphasizing the need to reduce road accidents involving heavy vehicles in the metropolis.

He further assured residents of the government’s commitment to implementing deliberate and decisive measures to enhance road safety across the state.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about student safety and road traffic management in Maiduguri. Governor Zulum’s administration has pledged to enforce stricter regulations on heavy vehicles as part of broader efforts to protect lives and prevent future tragedies.
