Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca described his team’s 2-0 loss to Ipswich Town on Monday as “a strange game,” acknowledging that some matches simply don’t go as planned.
Speaking in a post-match interview published on the club’s website Tuesday, the Italian coach noted that despite creating numerous opportunities at Portman Road, it was Ipswich who secured victory. Chelsea saw Joao Felix’s goal disallowed for offside and had Cole Palmer hit the post in the first half. Ipswich capitalized with a penalty from Liam Delap in the 12th minute and a second-half goal by former Chelsea winger Omari Hutchinson.
“It was a bit of a strange game,” Maresca said. “We created so many chances in the first half, and in the opening minutes of the second half, we had two clear opportunities, including Joao’s header.
“The second goal killed the game for us. Sometimes, when you create so many chances—hit the post, face VAR decisions, see incredible saves from the goalkeeper or defenders blocking shots—it just doesn’t go your way.
“It’s frustrating because it was another chance for us, but credit to Ipswich. Their defensive desire was outstanding, blocking shots and making crucial saves. Congratulations to them.”
The loss marks Chelsea’s second consecutive defeat under Maresca, following their 2-1 setback against Fulham on Boxing Day. The Blues have now managed just one point from their last three games, including a goalless draw against Everton on December 22.
Despite this dip in form, Chelsea remains fourth in the league standings, one point behind Arsenal in third and two points behind second-placed Nottingham Forest.
When asked about the team’s physical condition, Maresca dismissed any concerns, stating:
“No, tonight wasn’t about physicality or fitness. When you fail to create chances, you might say we lacked sharpness or energy. But we created so many opportunities—the post, VAR, and other close calls. It just wasn’t our day.”
Chelsea will look to bounce back in their first match of the new year against Crystal Palace on Saturday. In their last five encounters with the Eagles, the Blues have won two, lost two, and drawn one, making it a challenging test to regain momentum.
