Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, Nigeria’s Deputy Chief Whip in the House of Representatives, has died at the age of 59. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, passed away on January 15, 2025, following a brief illness.
First elected in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly. In this role, she championed women’s empowerment and social welfare initiatives, earning admiration from colleagues and constituents alike.
Her death has been met with widespread grief. Senator Oluremi Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences, describing her passing as a significant loss to the nation. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, called her death “devastating,” stating that the state has lost an extraordinary leader.
The APC in Ogun State praised her as a beacon of hope for her impactful contributions to public service.
Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga’s dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians will be remembered as her lasting legacy.
