Dortmund Sack Coach Nuri Sahin After Champions League Defeat

By Abigail Philip David

Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday. The club cited a “loss of faith” in Sahin’s ability to meet their goals as the primary reason for the decision.

Dortmund, last season’s Champions League runners-up, have endured a rough patch under Sahin, suffering four consecutive defeats in all competitions. They currently sit 10th in the Bundesliga, a staggering 20 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.

Potential Successors
Speculation about Sahin’s replacement has begun, with former Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag and ex-Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt rumored to be top candidates. Ten Hag was recently spotted attending Dortmund matches, fueling the rumors.

Sahin’s Tenure
The 36-year-old Sahin, who took over as head coach this summer, previously served as assistant to Edin Terzic during Dortmund’s impressive run to the Champions League final last season. Despite his long-standing association with the club as a player and coach, Dortmund’s leadership felt compelled to make a change.

“We have unfortunately lost faith that we will achieve our sporting goals,” said Dortmund’s sporting CEO Lars Ricken on Wednesday. “The decision hurts, but it was unavoidable after the defeat in Bologna. We greatly value Nuri Sahin and his contributions but believed a change was necessary to regain momentum.”

A String of Managerial Changes
Sahin’s departure continues a turbulent trend for Dortmund, who have seen eight managerial changes since Jurgen Klopp left in 2015. Only Lucien Favre has managed to stay in the role for more than two years during this period.

Interim Leadership
U19 coach Mike Tullberg has been appointed interim head coach and will lead the team in their next Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Sahin expressed his disappointment but wished the club well, saying, “Unfortunately, I was not able to meet Dortmund’s expectations at this time. This club will always have a special place in my heart, and I wish them success moving forward.”

Sahin’s Legacy
A product of Dortmund’s academy, Sahin made 274 appearances for the club as a player, helping them secure the Bundesliga title in 2011. He also had stints at Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Antalyaspor, where he transitioned into coaching. Before returning to Dortmund, Sahin managed Antalyaspor, leading them to seventh and 13th-place league finishes.

Despite his deep ties to Dortmund, Sahin struggled to deliver consistent results this season. The team’s away form has been particularly troubling, with just four wins and nine losses in 15 matches. Adding to the disappointment, they were eliminated early from the German Cup by Wolfsburg.

What’s Next?
While Dortmund’s Champions League hopes remain alive, their domestic struggles have raised questions about the club’s broader strategy. The search for a new head coach will be critical as they aim to stabilize and return to contention in the Bundesliga and Europe.
