The Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs has successfully repatriated 21 underage girls from Riyom Local Government Area (LGA) who were intercepted by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command while en route to Lagos for child labor.
The girls were received by Plateau State’s Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Ngo Josephine Piyo, at her residence in Jos, accompanied by officials from Riyom LGA, traditional leaders, the Plateau State Chairperson of the Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission, and other stakeholders from the girls’ community.
Hon. Caroline Dafur, the Commissioner for Women Affairs in Plateau, expressed her gratitude for the successful repatriation. She emphasized the need for stricter sanctions against parents who neglect their responsibilities, urging the Ministry of Women Affairs to ensure that those responsible for the trafficking of the girls face legal consequences.
She assured that the Caleb Mutfwang-led administration is committed to prioritizing the welfare and well-being of children in Plateau State, and pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the safety and future of the state’s children.
The Deputy Governor also commended the professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja and acknowledged the proactive efforts of the Plateau State Abuja Liaison Office. “Plateau State is making significant strides in the fight against child trafficking, thanks to increased awareness and the interception of traffickers by the Joint Taskforce and the vigilant citizens who raise alarms about suspicious movements,” she said.
The statement also highlighted the efforts of the Riyom LGA chairman, local officials, and the First Lady in supporting the repatriation process. The Ministry of Women Affairs, along with the Gender Commission, will continue to work with the local government to intensify awareness and sensitization at the grassroots level.
The repatriated girls will undergo counseling and psychosocial support. The ministry will also engage with their parents to address the root causes of child trafficking, with the aim of finding sustainable solutions. The goal is to ensure that the girls can return to school or acquire skills that will benefit them and society.
