Manchester City Advance to Champions League Playoff Round with 3-1 Victory Over Club Brugge

By Abigail Philip David

Manchester City secured their place in the Champions League playoff knockout round after defeating Club Brugge 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. The victory ensured that manager Pep Guardiola maintained his perfect record of advancing past the group stage in every season of his managerial career.

Despite dominating possession in the first half, City struggled to create clear opportunities. Ilkay Gündogan had a goal disallowed for offside, and they were punished just before halftime when Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika calmly finished off a counter-attack orchestrated by Ferran Jutglà.

City came out stronger in the second half, with Mateo Kovacic sparking the comeback in the 53rd minute with a brilliant solo run and finish. Moments later, a deflected cross from Josko Gvardiol, following skillful play by substitute Savinho, resulted in an own goal by Joel Ordóñez. Savinho then capped off a stellar performance by scoring in the 77th minute to seal the victory for City.

The win marked a significant turnaround for City, whose European campaign had been marred by inconsistent performances. Earlier in the competition, they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP, squandered a three-goal lead at home to Feyenoord, fell 2-0 to Juventus, and conceded four goals to Paris Saint-Germain.

With their resurgence, City now await Friday’s draw to determine their opponent in the two-legged playoff round.

Elsewhere in the Champions League:

– Liverpool finished atop the league phase table despite a narrow 3-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven, benefiting from Barcelona’s 2-2 draw at home against Atalanta.
– Arsenal and Aston Villa secured spots in the round of 16 after strong performances in the final group stage matches.
– Atlético Madrid also booked a direct path to the round of 16, while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich won their final games but must navigate the playoff round after slow starts to their campaigns.

The knockout phase is shaping up to be fiercely competitive, with several heavyweights, including City, facing the challenge of a playoff tie to continue their European journey.
