USPF Hands Over Emerging Tech Centre to Ogun State Institute of Technology

By Our Correspondent

The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially handed over a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), located in Igbesa, Ogun State. This project, named the Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC), is set to enhance the learning experience of students while fostering digital innovation, research, and development (R&D) for Nigeria’s economic growth.

The Significance of the Project

The ETC is one of the access projects under the USPF, marking a significant milestone towards Nigeria’s goal of bridging the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion. The project is equipped with 100 desktop computers, cutting-edge emerging technology applications, bandwidth, and connectivity tools, ensuring that both students and faculty have access to advanced technology and resources.

MoU for Sustainability

During the inauguration and handover ceremony, a key part of the proceedings was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between USPF and OGITECH, aimed at ensuring the effective utilization and sustainability of the ICT project. Yomi Arowosafe, the USPF Secretary, emphasized that the ETC is more than just a physical space. It symbolizes a vision, a commitment, and a significant investment in both Ogun State and the nation’s future.

Impact on Education and Innovation

With 9,300 students, OGITECH is one of Nigeria’s leading technology institutions. The ETC is expected to have a profound impact, enhancing student learning and creating opportunities for innovation and research in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity. It will also allow faculty members to integrate technology into their teaching, collaborate with industry partners, and foster entrepreneurship within the community.

Supporting Economic Growth

Arowosafe highlighted that the ETC will serve as a hub for start-ups and small businesses, offering a platform for incubation and growth. The project is designed to stimulate economic development by contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Sustainability and Future Plans

The signing of the MoU aligns with USPF’s sustainability strategy, ensuring that the project remains functional and beneficial for the long term. According to Arowosafe, the ownership of future USPF projects will be transferred to beneficiary organizations, communities, and groups, encouraging them to take responsibility and ensure the projects continue to serve their purpose after handover.

OGITECH’s Commitment

Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, Rector of OGITECH, expressed his gratitude to the NCC and the USPF for the installation of the project. He assured that the ETC would be used effectively, benefiting both the Institute and the broader community. He also pledged to ensure the sustainability of the project in line with the MoU’s provisions.

About USPF

The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) was established by the Nigerian Federal Government to achieve universal access and service to ICTs, particularly in rural, unserved, and underserved areas of Nigeria. The Fund aims to ensure that telecommunications services are accessible, affordable, and equitable, supporting Nigeria’s social inclusion and equity goals.
