FUL Auto Crash: Federal University Lokoja Shut Down Indefinitely

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

Following student protests after a fatal auto crash that claimed the lives of five students, the Federal University Lokoja has announced an indefinite closure to restore calm.

The protests erupted on Monday after a trailer crashed into a school shuttle bus, resulting in seven fatalities, including five students. The tragic incident occurred at Felele City Centre, Lokoja.

In a circular issued on Thursday, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, confirmed the closure. The document, Ref. Number FUL/R/GEN/REGC/03, was sent to the Kogi State Commissioner of Police and the Director of the DSS Kogi State Command.

The circular explained, “Following the unfortunate loss of five students on Monday, 17th February, and the ongoing student protests, the Vice-Chancellor, in consultation with Management and the Senate, has decided to close the university indefinitely.”

The closure came after advice from State Security Agencies and efforts from the State Government to address the protests. The university administration emphasized that the closure was necessary to prevent further violence or loss of life.

Students were instructed to vacate the campuses by 12 noon, Thursday, 20th February 2025, for their safety.

The decision highlights the university’s commitment to safeguarding the students’ well-being amid growing tensions following the tragic accident.
