BREAKING: Lagos Assembly Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip Resign

By Abigail Philip David

The Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Nojeem Fatai, has resigned from his position. Similarly, the Chief Whip, Sanni Okanlawon, has also stepped down.

Their resignations come amid growing political shifts within the House, as lawmakers praised Speaker Mojisola Meranda for aligning with the directives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and stepping aside.

Meranda, who has served as Speaker for 49 days, is expected to resign soon, with lawmakers commending her leadership.

“The entire chamber is in tears. You have restored the spirit of friendship, comradeship, and loyalty to this House. We have seen the sense of belonging and the understanding that the party is supreme,” said lawmaker Temitope Adewale.

Addressing his colleagues, he added, “This is Asiwaju’s House. Let’s not lose hope; things will change for the better.”

Another lawmaker acknowledged the political realities at play, stating, “You did very well, but as politicians, our party is supreme. We are proud party men, and we obey our party. Madam Speaker, I pray for you—may God be with you.”

The developments signal a major restructuring within the Lagos Assembly, as party influence continues to shape leadership decisions.
