Sokoto state govt commits to eliminating Tuberculosis and Leprosy in the state

Sokoto state Commissioner for Health Dr Faruku Umar Abubakar Wurno stated thi while speaking at an event to mark this year’s World Tuberculosis Day organized by the State Ministry of Health. 

Dr Faruku Umar said this was in consideration of the negative effect of the diseases which have now become rampant especially in rural areas.

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry Nura Bello Maikwanci in a statement said the Commissioner commended Development partners for their continued support in the fight against TB and Leprosy in the state.

Speaking, the state Programme Manager TB and Leprosy Dr Sanusi Ridwan Kalambaina explained that World TB Day is designed to raise public awareness about the dangers of Tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease globally.

Dr Sanusi Ridwan explained that Tuberculosis is a contagious and airborne disease and is among the top ten causes of death worldwide.

According to him in 2023, TB was categorized as the world leading infectious disease killer, surfacing COVID-19.

He added that the theme for this year is “Yes ! We can end TB: commit, invest and deliver “

Speakers at the event highlighted more on the dangers associated with the disease and advocate for stronger synergy to eliminate it.

Later, a road walk was held which started from  Shehu Kangiwa Secretariat and covered some areas in the metropolis.
