Okpebholo Meets Senate Deputy President Over Edo Travellers’ Killings

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has paid a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, following the tragic killing of travellers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Governor Okpebholo visited Senator Jibrin at his Maitama residence in Abuja on Monday to express his sympathies over the incident. The victims, hunters from Kano State, were attacked and murdered by a mob while traveling to Kano for Sallah celebrations last Thursday.

A statement issued by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, confirmed the visit. The governor assured that the Edo State government would support the families of the victims and ensure justice is served.

He also disclosed that 14 suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings and would be transferred to Abuja for further investigation. “It’s unfortunate that this happened in our state. The President is taking decisive action, and the Inspector General of Police has already launched an investigation. We will not rest until justice is served,” Okpebholo stated.

In response, Senator Jibrin emphasized the need for swift action to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences. He commended the Edo State government for its efforts and urged continued commitment to apprehending all those responsible.

“We cannot undo what has happened, but what Nigerians expect is for the perpetrators to be arrested and prosecuted. If justice is served, it will act as a deterrent to others,” Jibrin said.

He also acknowledged the long-standing peaceful coexistence between different ethnic groups in Edo State and expressed confidence that such an incident would not recur under Governor Okpebholo’s leadership.
