WHD: Seadogs sensitises drivers on STDs in A’Ibom

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) also known as Pyrates Confraternity, Atlantic Shores Deck, Eket Chapter yesterday carried out a sensitization programme on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) for drivers in Eket Local Council of Akwa Ibom.

At the ceremony at Atabong SoftPark in Eket, President of the Association, Capoon Idongest Ifon, said the gesture was in commemoration of World Health Day 2025 which was marked on Monday.

Ifon said the essence of the event was to create awareness for drivers on STDs,  to understand their body status and how STDs affect their work and involved testing their Blood Pressure and vital body statistics.

“We thought it wise to extend WHD 2025 to drivers at the park, to tell them about mortality rate during child birth and how STDs child mortality rate during birth period.” The president said.

Also speaking, Dr. Ukeme Etok, the Resource Person, enlightened the drivers on causes of STDs, symptoms identification preventive measures abd  treatment.

Etok who did a general overview of STDs, the effects and complications of STDs also said that one of the most important effects inline with the agenda of the of the WHD was the effect of the disease on maternal and new born health.

He warned thay those with multiple partners are prone to spreading the STDs and advised the drivers to stay faithful to their partners inorder to prevent further spread.

The Chairman of the Atabong SoftPark, Mr Iniakpan Thompson thanked the association for finding time to carry out the sensitization and commended them for their interest in the well being of the drivers.

Highpoint of the event was the distribution of condoms to further prevent the spread of STDs during sexual activities and further protect the infants infection during birth.
