Retired Police Officers Set for Nationwide Protest Over Pension Scheme

By Idibia Gabriel, Kaduna

The Kaduna State chapter of the Union of Retired Police Officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has announced plans to embark on a nationwide peaceful protest on July 21, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to demand the exit of the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS.

Chairman of the chapter, Retired CSP Mannir M. Lawal Zaria, and Vice Chairman, Retired ASP Danlami Maigamo, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Kaduna.

“We have no option but to embark on another peaceful protest, tagged the ‘Mother of All Peaceful Protests,’ on July 21, 2025,” the union stated, stressing that the protest will be nationwide and strictly nonviolent.

“As law-abiding citizens, we will continue to pursue our demand through peaceful means until our voices are heard,” the statement added.

The decision was reached during the union’s monthly meeting held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Kaduna, where unresolved issues surrounding the police’s continued inclusion in the CPS were discussed as the main agenda.

The union recalled that it had previously staged a peaceful protest from February 24 to March 3, 2025, at the National Assembly, involving members from the Kaduna and Bauchi State chapters. Protesters submitted petitions to five key offices, including the chairmen of relevant Senate and House Committees and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Three Arms Zone, Abuja.

Despite these efforts, the group expressed disappointment over the lack of response from the National Assembly, particularly concerning the report of a public hearing on the proposed Police Pension Board held on November 19, 2024.

The union further distanced itself from any group planning violent demonstrations, emphasizing that their agitation is driven by economic hardship, financial distress, depression, and an increasing mortality rate among retired officers under the current pension scheme.
