Oborevwori Urges Corps Members to Shun Cultism, Drug Abuse, and Other Anti-Social Behaviours

By Anne Azuka

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has called on Corps members deployed to the state to shun anti-social behaviours such as cultism, drug abuse, and alcoholism, noting that such actions are contrary to the ideals of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The governor gave the advice during the official closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Orientation Course held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. Trakiriowei Harry ThankGod, Governor Oborevwori warned that such behaviours could jeopardize not only the values of their service year but also their future.

He encouraged the Corps members to remain focused and committed as they proceed to their various places of primary assignment.

“Over the past 21 days, you have undergone a rigorous programme designed to equip, reorient, and prepare you for the noble task of national service,” the governor said. “Embrace this call with seriousness and patriotism. Your attitude throughout the service year will determine not only what you gain from this experience but also how much the nation benefits from your contributions.”

He assured the Corps members that Delta State is peaceful, secure, and hospitable.

“Wherever you are posted, you will experience the warmth and goodwill of our people. I urge you to respect the cultural norms and traditions of the communities you will serve in,” he added.

Declaring the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Orientation Course officially closed, Oborevwori advised Corps members to demonstrate tolerance, adaptability, and understanding—qualities that embody the spirit of national unity and service.

“During this orientation, you have been instilled with core values and leadership attributes—perseverance, discipline, selflessness, teamwork, and the ability to live harmoniously with people from diverse backgrounds,” he said.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator for Delta, Mr. John Kwaghe, expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for his continued support, which he said is evident in the construction of internal road networks and other ongoing infrastructural developments at the camp.

He commended the Corps members for their discipline, resilience, and exemplary conduct throughout the three-week orientation programme.

“Your attitude has reflected the highest ideals of the NYSC—patriotism, responsibility, and unity. Your comportment is a source of pride and a strong indicator of your readiness to serve Nigeria with integrity and loyalty,” Kwaghe said.

He further encouraged them to build on the skills acquired through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme and to take advantage of the post-camp training to enhance their entrepreneurial potential.
