IHR Congratulates NAHCON Chairman, Calls for Rebranding and Operational Reforms

By Jabiru Hassan

(IHR), a registered faith-based civil society organisation that monitors and reports on Hajj and Umrah activities in Nigeria, has congratulated the Chairman of the (NAHCON), Ambassador , on his appointment and confirmation by the Senate.

In a statement, IHR expressed confidence that Ambassador Yusuf’s diplomatic background and previous participation in Hajj operations position him to effectively address pressing challenges within Nigeria’s Hajj and Umrah industry.

The organisation noted that his appointment comes at a critical time when the commission is grappling with negative public perception that has affected its credibility and capacity to fully discharge its responsibilities as provided in the NAHCON Establishment Act 2006. It therefore urged the new chairman to provide purposeful leadership aimed at rebranding the commission and restoring public confidence.

IHR called on the NAHCON leadership to initiate operational reforms in line with global best practices among Hajj-participating countries, advocating the introduction of merit-based policies that will prioritise service delivery to pilgrims above all other considerations.

While acknowledging the limitations surrounding expectations for the 2026 Hajj—given that most pre-Hajj arrangements were concluded before his appointment—the group encouraged the chairman to begin laying the groundwork for long-term structural reforms that would enhance transparency, accountability, and professionalism in future Hajj operations.

The civil society organisation also urged NAHCON to engage critical stakeholders across the Hajj and Umrah sector beyond the confines of the Hajj House, provided such consultations do not compromise the interests of Nigerian pilgrims.

IHR reaffirmed its commitment to utilising both public and administrative channels to offer constructive criticism aimed at improving the standard of Hajj administration and ensuring better services for Nigerian pilgrims.

It stressed that protecting the interests of Nigerian pilgrims remains a top priority, pledging to continue undertaking this responsibility diligently, mindful of the spiritual significance of Hajj as the fifth pillar of Islam.
