Gunmen Open Fire in Plateau, Women and Children Among 14 Killed

By Israel Adamu, Jos

At least 14 persons have been reportedly killed in a fresh attack along Chirang Road in Mangor District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Sources told our correspondent that the victims were ambushed on Thursday evening while returning from the weekly Bokkos market to their respective communities.

The Bokkos market, which holds every Thursday, attracts traders and buyers—especially for Irish potatoes—from within and outside Plateau State.

According to eyewitnesses, the victims were intercepted by gunmen who opened fire on their vehicle, killing many on the spot. Among the deceased were women and children.

The Bokkos Cultural Development Forum (BCDF), in a statement signed by its chairman, Farmasum Fuddang, confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the attack.

“The victims were returning from the weekly market in Bokkos town when their vehicle was ambushed. Victims included women and little babies,” Fuddang said.

“This violence occurs despite various so-called peace and reconciliation efforts between farming and herding communities.”

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Plateau State Police Command nor Operation Safe Haven had issued an official statement on the attack.

The tragic incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks in Plateau communities despite ongoing peace initiatives.
