Delta Governor Approves N10bn for Pension Arrears

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has approved the immediate release of ₦10 billion to clear outstanding pension arrears owed to retirees in the state.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with the State Pension Board, led by the Chairman, Bureau of State Pensions, Mr. Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, and the Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Anthony Osanekwu.

Oborevwori noted that since assuming office, his administration has paid ₦36.4 billion in pensions, with ₦1.4 billion released monthly to meet obligations. He stressed that the state has not defaulted under his leadership.

“Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to Delta State. It is only right that they receive what is due to them. Under my watch, their welfare will remain a top priority,” the governor assured.

To ensure accountability, Oborevwori announced the creation of an oversight team to monitor the disbursement of the ₦10 billion, promising strict transparency in the process.

Reacting to the announcement, Ogidi-Gbegbaje described it as a “pleasant surprise” and pledged that the funds would be used exclusively for pension payments.

Also, Osanekwu, speaking on behalf of retirees, expressed gratitude to the governor, calling the gesture timely and magnanimous.

It will be recalled that pensioners in the state have repeatedly lamented unpaid entitlements dating back to 2012.
