We Are Facing Series of Challenges in the Institution — Prof. Bashir Garba

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The Vice-Chancellor of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS), Professor Bashir Garba, MFR, has disclosed that the institution is grappling with inadequate funding, poor power supply, and insecurity, which continue to hamper its operations.

Speaking during activities marking the university’s combined 50th anniversary and 42nd Convocation ceremony, Prof. Garba said despite the challenges, UDUS has made remarkable strides over the decades.

He recalled that the institution was established in 1975 as one of the seven second-generation universities created by the Federal Government to expand access to higher education.

“Though founded in 1975, our true beginning came in October 1977 when 93 pioneering undergraduates and 102 pre-degree students walked through our gates,” he stated. “By 1983, we launched our Postgraduate School, and in 1985, our expansion accelerated with the establishment of the College of Health Sciences, as well as new faculties in Law, Agriculture, and Veterinary Medicine.”

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that while the university has recorded notable achievements, overcoming the current challenges remains crucial for sustaining academic excellence and driving research and innovation.
