Chinese Ambassador’s Cup: 2025 Wushu Championship Set to Hold in Abuja

The Chinese Ambassador’s Cup-Wushu Championship, also known as the China–Nigeria Friendship Cup, is scheduled to take place from October 29 to 31, 2025, at the Velodrome, National Stadium, Abuja.

Organised by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), the championship will feature participants drawn from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, with cash and consolation prizes for winners and other participants.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor and Director of the China Cultural Centre, said the Wushu Championship represents more than a competition; it is a celebration of shared values, discipline, and mutual respect.

“The purpose of this event is not just to compete but to gather people who love Chinese martial arts to enjoy the beauty and spirit of Wushu,” Yang said.

“Wushu is not about defeating others, but about self-discipline, respect, and helping the weak. Through this event, we hope both Chinese and Nigerian athletes will find inspiration, confidence, and friendship.”

Yang stressed that martial arts have long served as a bridge between cultures, promoting peace and understanding. He described Wushu as “a way of life that combines strength with compassion,” and said the Championship underscores China’s commitment to deepening cultural exchange with Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Mykel Eneduwa, Patron of the FCT Wushu Association and President of the Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria, described Wushu as “a tool for peace, values, and discipline,” and praised the Chinese Embassy for its continued support for the sport’s development in Nigeria.

“Wushu teaches respect, integrity, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit; values we need to build the leaders of tomorrow. This tournament is not just about competition; it’s also about the values and lessons that come with it,” Eneduwa said.

He explained that the China–Nigeria Friendship Cup will feature six divisions, including Taiji (Tai Chi), Sanshou (Sanda), team forms, creative forms, and weight categories for both male and female competitors.

He further revealed that registration for the event is free, with accommodation and feeding provided for athletes during the championship.

Also speaking, Sesan Adeboyejo, North Central Zonal Representative of the Nigeria Wushu Kung Fu Federation and a representative of the National Sports Commission, commended the Chinese Embassy for hosting what he described as a “historic collaboration in sports and culture.”

“This partnership between the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Wushu Kung Fu Federation is what we have long dreamed of, and it’s now becoming a reality.  The purpose of this event is youth engagement and cultural exchange between Nigeria and China,” Adeboyejo said.

He expressed the National Sports Commission’s appreciation to the Chinese Embassy for its continuous support in developing martial arts and sports diplomacy in Nigeria, and pledged the readiness of the agency to collaborate with the embassy to advance sports diplomacy between both countries.

“On behalf of the Federation and the National Sports Commission, I say a very big thank you to the Chinese Embassy for organising this event and inviting us to collaborate. It’s a partnership that will leave a lasting impact on our athletes and our cultural ties,” Adeboyejo added.
