Bayelsa, FRSC Deepen Collaboration to Reduce Road Crashes and Improve Traffic Signage

By Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Government has announced plans to strengthen its partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to reduce road crashes through improved signage, stricter safety standards, and joint inspections of road projects. The commitment was made on Monday by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Surveyor Moses Teibowei, during a courtesy visit by the new FRSC Bayelsa Sector Commander, Corps Commander Abosi Prince, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Yenagoa.Teibowei commended the FRSC for its sustained efforts in promoting discipline among drivers and reducing road accidents, describing the Corps as “an indispensable partner” in the state’s infrastructure development. He said the Governor Douye Diri administration places road safety at the centre of all construction works and insists that proper signage remains a mandatory component of every project.

According to the commissioner, the state is ready to deepen collaboration with the FRSC through joint road audits, technical consultations, and continued engagement of the Corps for the production and installation of road signs at strategic locations. He listed ongoing road projects—including the Yenagoa–Oporoma Road, Glory Drive Phase 3, Agbura/Oxbow Lake Road, new dual carriageways in the Yenagoa City GRA, the East-West–Kalama Road, and rehabilitated road sections across the state—as evidence of the government’s commitment to safer infrastructure.Earlier, Corps Commander Abosi Prince said the visit was aimed at reinforcing cooperation and identifying new areas of joint intervention. He reminded the Ministry of the FRSC’s statutory mandate to offer safety recommendations to government agencies and contractors throughout the stages of road design and construction. He also noted the FRSC’s exclusive legal authority to produce and erect road signs nationwide.

Prince requested the construction of a roundabout at the junction linking Glory Drive Phases 2 and 3 along the Airport Road, explaining that the intervention would improve traffic flow and eliminate recurring accident points in the area. Both the Ministry and the FRSC expressed confidence that the renewed partnership would enhance motoring safety, reduce crashes, and ensure more orderly road use by residents and visitors in Bayelsa State.
