Kano Commissioner Urges Deputy Governor to Resign After APC Defection

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has said Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo should consider resigning following his decision not to defect with Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Waiya made the remarks on Thursday while speaking to journalists in Kano, according to Channels Television. He said effective governance depends on trust and shared political alignment within the executive arm of government.

According to the commissioner, it would be inappropriate for a deputy governor who no longer shares the governor’s political platform to continue participating in sensitive executive council meetings.

“This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should be part of routine council meetings,” Waiya was quoted as saying, adding that trust is central to governance.

He said resignation would be the most honourable option available to the deputy governor.

The comments follow Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC, a move the commissioner described as beneficial to Kano State due to closer alignment with the Federal Government.

Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, said his decision to join the ruling party was aimed at strengthening cooperation with the Federal Government and attracting more development projects.

The governor was formally received into the APC in Kano, alongside several political office holders, including members of the state House of Assembly, federal lawmakers, and local government officials.
