Kaduna Labour Threatens Strike Over Delayed Salary Adjustments

The Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) in Kaduna State has warned of a possible strike over delays in implementing salary adjustments for civil servants on Grade Level 07 and above. In a communiqué issued after its State Administrative Council meeting, the council said the delay has heightened dissatisfaction among workers facing rising living costs without corresponding wage increases.

The JNC said a Minimum Wage and Consequential Adjustments Committee set up by the state government in 2024 had submitted its report, but implementation remains pending. It noted that subsequent engagements, including a staff verification exercise and a review committee, have not resulted in action. According to the council, while workers on Grade Levels 01 to 06 have benefited from a new minimum wage, senior civil servants are yet to receive adjustments.

The union said it had written to the state government on multiple occasions seeking implementation but had not received a response. It warned that failure to act before the end of April could lead to a boycott of the May Day celebration, a protest march and a possible industrial action across the state civil service. State government officials have not publicly responded to the latest position at the time of reporting.
