University Don Urges Government to Strengthen Geography Education to Support Nigeria’s Economy

From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

A university lecturer has called on the Federal Government to prioritise the study of geography in Nigeria’s education system, saying it is critical to effective natural resource management and economic development. The call was made by Prof. Ogidiolu during the 18th inaugural lecture of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, titled “Geographer in the Forest: Issues, Concerns and Tasks.”

He urged policymakers to strengthen geography education by making it a core subject at primary, junior, and senior secondary school levels, arguing that the discipline plays a key role in environmental planning and resource sustainability.

According to him, declining forest health could lead to economic and environmental challenges, including reduced ecosystem services and environmental degradation. “Forest health is important because forests support human well-being through water filtration and economic resources,” he said.

Prof. Ogidiolu explained that forest health refers to the ability of forests to maintain structure and resilience over time, noting that monitoring is essential to address emerging threats. He added that geography professionals have a key role in environmental monitoring and forest management. He also highlighted the potential of sustainably managed Nigerian forests in supporting second-generation biofuels, which are considered cleaner energy alternatives.

Earlier, Vice Chancellor Prof. Salisu Usman Ogbo said the university had approved a structured schedule for inaugural lectures up to the 30th series, to run through 2027. He described inaugural lectures as key academic events that promote scholarship and institutional development.

He added that the institution aims to expand participation and elevate the visibility of its academic lecture series.
