The Federal Government and Plateau State Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to revitalise tourism in the state through the rehabilitation of key sites and infrastructure. The agreement was signed in Abuja by Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.Both parties said the initiative aims to harness Plateau’s tourism potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve internally generated revenue.
Musawa described tourism as a key sector for national development, noting that it can support employment and community engagement while encouraging environmental preservation. She also highlighted Plateau’s reputation as a major tourism destination in Nigeria.
Governor Mutfwang said the state’s natural attractions and cultural festivals position it for increased domestic and international tourism. He cited events such as the Plateau Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival as part of efforts to promote the state.The governor acknowledged existing security challenges but said the government is strengthening safety measures, including the use of technology to improve response to crime.
He also announced plans for a “Welcome to Plateau” initiative aimed at attracting diaspora investment, alongside proposals for a diaspora-focused development project.Officials expressed confidence that the partnership will support the long-term growth of the tourism sector in Plateau State.
