.The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) expresses grave concern over the disturbing allegation made by Kimberly Daniels against Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, regarding an alleged attempt to bribe a United States lawmaker.
In a release signed by the organization’s Director of Administration and Programmes, Tola Oresanwo on behalf of the organization’s Chairman, Debo Adeniran he noted that “This allegation, which borders on issues of integrity and international diplomacy, has the potential to significantly tarnish Nigeria’s image in the global community.” “It is particularly troubling that such a claim is directed at a high-ranking government official entrusted with the critical responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s security and upholding its reputation.”
CACOL therefore calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria to, as a matter of urgency, launch a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation into the matter. The outcome of such an investigation must be made public, and the government must clearly state its official position to reassure Nigerians and the international community of its commitment to accountability and ethical governance.
The organization notes that the allegation is not only embarrassing but also damaging to Nigeria’s credibility on the international stage. At a time when the country is seeking global partnerships and investment, such controversies risk undermining diplomatic trust and confidence.
Furthermore, CACOL strongly condemns the worsening insecurity across various parts of the country. The persistent incidents of violence, kidnappings, and killings have left many citizens living in fear, with little confidence in the ability of authorities to guarantee their safety. The resulting climate of uncertainty is severely affecting economic activities, discouraging investment, and diminishing the earning potential and overall well-being of Nigerians.
“It is unacceptable that citizens continue to bear the brunt of insecurity while allegations of misconduct surface against those in positions of authority. The Federal Government must take decisive steps not only to address this allegation but also to urgently improve the nation’s security architecture to restore public confidence.”
CACOL reiterates its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance and urges all relevant authorities to act swiftly in the interest of justice and national integrity.
