The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, over an alleged plot to kidnap his aunt in a case authorities say highlights rising security concerns.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspect allegedly paid N900,000 in two instalments to individuals he believed were kidnappers to abduct the woman, who reportedly raised him from childhood. According to the police, the plan was foiled after the individuals approached by the suspect alerted authorities and handed him over, preventing the abduction
.Edafe said preliminary findings indicate that Destiny lived with his aunt between the ages of five and 15, during which she supported his upbringing and education. He was later said to have lost contact with the family. The suspect is reported to have admitted involvement during interrogation, stating that he financed the plan through proceeds from his haulage and building materials business.
Reacting to the development, the intended victim expressed shock and said she could not understand the motive behind the alleged plot. She, however, maintained that the law should take its course. Police said investigations are ongoing and the suspect remains in custody. Authorities also reiterated the need for public vigilance and cooperation with security agencies to prevent criminal activities.
