There is something fundamentally flawed with the operations of the Nigeria Police that does not respect the rights to life and human dignity.
These pose critical and fundamental questions on how police personnel and recruited and trained. Is the police still a dumping ground for never-do- wells, especially academically?Do people who didn’t find it easy in their engagements see the police as a place or avenue to seek haven? Maybe, to unleash their earlier disappointments in life on the larger society?
Despite wide range reforms, over the years, to strengthen and streamline the operations of the police, nothing has changed. Rather, situations are degenerating.
What has happened to the curriculum training them? Are adjustments to improve their contents such improvements in the areas of human psychology, human rights , and other aspects of the coinstitution. Use of firearms, and what have you?
When officers are disengaged from the special and operational units, do they undergo trainings that would deemphasise the mindset those exposures from their previous encounters subjected them to or the crossed over to their new operational responsibilities with the previous exposures and mindset?
A LOT NEEDS TO BE DONE. IF NOT, IT WILL CONTINUE WITH THIS FIRE BRIGADE APPROACH.
NO LEVEL OF PUNISHMENT ON THE CULPRIT WILL REPLACE HUMAN LIFE.
