The Kogi State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhaji Ademu Seidu Haruna, has called on the government to give more attention to funding media houses and improving the welfare of journalists.
Alhaji Ademu made the call while joining counterparts worldwide to mark World Press Freedom Day. He noted that such support would significantly improve productivity, stressing that a free press cannot thrive without adequate funding and improved welfare for journalists.
In a statement by the State Secretary of the NUJ, Comrade Atuluku Samuel, PhD, Alhaji Ademu observed that in the contemporary world, media organisations face numerous challenges. He therefore urged media owners, governments, and other critical stakeholders to provide modern technological tools to meet the growing demands of the industry.
He appealed to the Kogi State Government to upgrade facilities in its media establishments, including Radio Kogi and Graphic Newspapers, increase funding for the State Ministry of Information, and establish a state-owned television station.
Alhaji Ademu emphasised that press freedom entails granting journalists unrestricted access to information and enabling them to perform their duties without fear of harassment, intimidation, or threats to their safety. He commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for maintaining a cordial relationship with journalists, but called for greater synergy.
“Let me say that in Kogi State, press freedom under Governor Ododo has been impressive. The story is positive, and there has been a cordial relationship between the government and the press,” he said.
He further noted that the NUJ requires a more conducive environment to function, urging the state government to undertake a signature project for the union, as its existing structures are in poor condition and require urgent intervention.
Highlighting the theme of this year’s celebration, Alhaji Ademu said it focuses on the protection of human rights and the safety of lives and property.
The Kogi NUJ Chairman assured that the council would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities, particularly security agencies, to ensure the safety and protection of journalists across the state.
