NULGE decries shortage of manpower in Anambra LG system

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), in Anambra, has called on Gov. Willie Obiano to embark on recruitment of workers in the Local Government system across the state.

NULGE Chairman in the state, Mr Chikwelu Adigwe, made the call when he paid a visit to the Transition Committee Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Council, Mr Arinzechukwu Awogu, at Atani, in Anambra, on Friday.

Adigwe, who described shortage of manpower in the state’s local government system as worrisome, said that the system would have only 17 years to fizzle out, if new workers were not employed.

He also called for the provision of operational vehicles for the heads of Local Government Administration, to ensure efficiency and effective service delivery in the system.

The NULGE chairman, however, commended Obiano for harmonising local government workers’ salaries with their counterparts in the state.

Adigwe, who said the visit to the council boss ended in a farmiliarisation tour of the newly elected NULGE executive in the state, promised to attend to the challenges of the workers.

He further commended the council workers for finding him and his team worthy of service to the union.

“The plight of the workers shall remain paramount in my administration. I therefore urge workers to be of good conduct, and equally adhere strictly to government policies and programmes for an enhanced local government system,” he said.

Adigwe highlighted some of the proposed programmes for the year to include organisation of late Agadaga Memorial lecture, organisation of the NULGE Week and establishment of the relaxation center at the union secretariat, Awka.

He said other programmes included award presentation to outstanding retired and serving council staff; as well as introduction of the motorcycle loan scheme for workers in remote areas.

In his remarks, the Transition Chairman of Ogbaru Local Council Area, Mr Arinzechukwu Awogu, promised to support and cooperate with the union to achieve its objectives.

Awogu also commended Obiano for bridging the salary disparity between state and local government workers, describing it as a “great relief’’ to the system.
