“No bank in Nigeria shall retrench or lay-off any staff”- CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria has suspended the laying off of bankers, going on in some commercial banks in the country.

The apex bank made this decision after its Bankers Committee meeting.

In a Press Release by CBN spokesman, Isaac Okorafor, the Bankers’ Committee further reviewed the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the banking industry.

The Committee deliberated on the issue of the operating costs of banks in view of the disruptions emanating from the global economic difficulties and decided that “no bank in Nigeria shall retrench or lay-off any staff of any cadre (including full-time and part-time).”

The statement said should it be very necessary for banks to do so, the approval of the CBN must be sought.
