Delta Commissioner tasks LG chairmen on market utilisation

Must read

The Delta Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr Chika Ossai, has urged local government chairmen across the state to ensure that traders make judicious use of the modern markets built in their respective areas.
Ossai made the call on Thursday when he led the management team of his ministry to inspect the ongoing landscaping of Owa-Alero modern market in Ika North-East Local Government area of the state.
The commissioner, who frowned at the way the market was being under-utilised, urged the traders to justify the huge amount spent by the state government in building the market by trading inside it.
He warned against trading at the park and on flower pots around the market.
The commissioner, who expressed displeasure at the filthy condition of the market, called on Ika North-East Council Chairman, Mr Victor Ebonka, to ensure that those saddled with the responsibility of keeping the market clean were up and doing.
He noted that all the markets built across the state by the Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration were of international standard and should be put to judicious use to justify the good intentions of government.
He promised to meet with the council chairman to work out some things in the market for the traders.
Some of the traders, who spoke, thanked the commissioner for the visit but complained that most of the stalls in the market were allocated to persons who were not traders.
They claimed that the allottees were, in turn, renting out the stalls to them at higher rates.
The traders appealed to the governor to come to their aid before the commencement of rain, saying that the market was just wasting away.
