Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu has said emphasis should be placed on the need for the current players in the senior national team to understand that playing for the country is more important than playing in a club side.

Kanu who made this declaration in a chat with Daybreak sports, said the Eagles has what it takes to be dominant in the continent if the players are educated on the differences between playing for a club side and wearing the national jersey.

The former African footballer of the year award winner explained that though the team has what it takes to rule the continent the technical crew must duel on team spirit than individual play.

Kanu said that if the players can key into the spirit of the importance of the national team jersey much can be taken from them for the expected results.

He noted that though the squad as it is today can boast of quality players, many players who are committed should also be given the opportunity to showcase their talents.

He said though it may not come easily as much is need to build a team, Nigeria can change the tide by insisting on talents laced with patriotism in picking players.

Kanu was of the view that the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations billed for Cameroun in 2021 can be won by the country but since football is no mathematics, the players should double their efforts towards as well as all the necessary arrangements are put in place by football administrators in the country.

On the expected rehabilitation works by Aliko Dangote at the Moshood Kashimawo Abiola stadium, Kanu said it was glorifying that the time has come to put the facility into proper use.

He commended the Sports Minister, Sunday Dare for the innovative idea which attracted private investors to help in the revival of the edifice, noting that with Dangote and the likes contributing positively to sports development the sky is the limit for the nation.
